Radio communication records between air traffic control and a Japan Airlines passenger plane show they did not discuss aborting the landing before the jet's collision with a Japan Coast Guard plane at Tokyo's Haneda Airport. The Japan Airlines Airbus A350 flying in from Hokkaido, northern Japan, collided with the smaller coast guard aircraft immediately after the jet touched down at Haneda on Tuesday evening. Both planes burst into flames. Five of the six coast guard crew were killed. The surviving pilot suffered serious injuries. All 379 passengers and crew on the JAL plane escaped via evacuation slides. Japan's transport ministry, which released the transcript, says it appears that air traffic controllers were not aware that the coast guard plane had entered the runway. Japan Airlines has also said its pilots told the company that they had no visual contact with the coast guard plane as the jet approached the runway. This suggests that both the control tower and the JAL pilots were unaware of the plane on the runway. The same transcript shows that air traffic control did not clear the coast guard plane to enter the runway. Japanese transport investigators began questioning the pilots of the JAL jet on Thursday morning.
