Russia ramping up assaults in eastern, southern Ukraine NHK

Russian forces are ramping up their offensive to encircle the strategic city of Bakhmut to control the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.

The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces said on Sunday that Russian troops have "not abandoned an attempt to surround the city of Bakhmut."

Russia's defense ministry said on Sunday that its forces had destroyed Ukrainian troops, armored vehicles, and other targets in the Donetsk region.

The ministry also said its military had fired artillery shells into the eastern Kharkiv and southern Zaporizhzhia regions.

Russia's shelling of residential buildings has been causing civilian casualties to rise.

Thirteen people were killed after a five-story apartment building was destroyed in Zaporizhzhia on Thursday. Three people died in the shelling of a house in the southern region of Kherson on Saturday.

The head of Ukraine's presidential office, Andriy Yermak, posted on social media that "Russian terrorists continue to kill civilians."

The British defense ministry noted that Russia is facing a shortage of military supplies in Ukraine.

The ministry said in its intelligence update on Sunday, "Russian mobilised reservists described being ordered to assault a Ukrainian concrete strong point armed with only 'firearms and shovels.'"
