Thousands have marched through central Bangkok to mark the start of Pride Month over the weekend. It took place as Thailand is on a course to become the first Southeast Asian nation to legalize same-sex marriage. People from the LGBTQ communities and their supporters took to the streets on Saturday. The rainbow parade attracted more than 200,000 participants and spectators. Some carried signs and placards calling for diversity and recognition. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin joined in. His government has set equal-marriage legislation as one of its key policies. The lower house passed the bill in March, and is expected to receive senate approval. It would become law once it receives royal assent. The senate reading of the bill is expected to take place later this month. If same-sex marriage is legalized, it would grant LGBTQ couples various rights, such as the ability to inherit property. A participant says if the bill passes, no one can criticize same-sex couples and say they can't get married.
