Protesters rallied in Manila on Monday calling on the Philippine government to rejoin the International Criminal Court. Former President Rodrigo Duterte pulled out of it after the court launched a probe of his "war on drugs."



Duterte appeared remotely at a pretrial hearing at The Hague on Friday. He's accused of crimes against humanity over the crackdown that left thousands dead.



Monday marked six years since the Philippines officially withdrew from the court. Demonstrators called on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to rejoin it -- something he's said he won't do.



An activist organizing the rally said joining the ICC again is the "logical step forward" after Duterte was flown to the court in the Netherlands. He said it would send a strong message that Filipinos are "serious in pursuing justice and accountability."



Another protester said restoring the Philippines' membership of the ICC would "ensure that impunity ends in our country."



The government says some 6,000 individuals were killed during Duterte's antidrug campaign. But lawmakers said at a congressional hearing the real figure could be 30,000.
