Japan to commit long-term support for Ukraine at conference in Tokyo NHK

Japan is set to pledge long-term support for Ukraine at a conference next week aimed at helping the country rebuild from Russia's ongoing invasion.

The Japan-Ukraine Conference for Promotion of Economic Growth and Reconstruction will take place in Tokyo on Monday.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal will attend.

NHK has learned the details of a draft joint statement outlining Japan's plan to help protect Ukraine's independence and restore the country's territorial integrity.

Japan will pledge continued assistance at all stages of the reconstruction effort. That includes emergency operations such as removing landmines and debris, to economic assistance and the promotion of advanced industries.

The two countries will agree on the importance of maintaining and strengthening sanctions against Russia as a form deterring Moscow's military activities.

Japan and Ukraine will also confirm their commitment to ensuring Russia cannot evade those sanctions.

The two sides are preparing to sign about 50 documents covering agriculture, infrastructure and five other fields.
