Typhoon Haikui is expected to make a landfall on Taiwan as early as late Sunday afternoon. It will be the first typhoon to land there in 4 years.

Officials say as Haikui approaches, violent winds have been blowing in some parts of Taiwan since Sunday morning.

Winds and rain are worsening, especially in the east.

Gusts of around 108 kilometers per hour were recorded on an island in Taitung County.

Some parts of Yilan County have recorded more than 150 millimeters of rain since Saturday.

Air and sea transportation connecting Taiwan's main island and small islands has been disrupted, with some services cancelled.

Many train services have also been cancelled.

Taiwan authorities warn that Haikui could cause damage, as it is expected to advance slowly.
