Israel vows to lay siege to Gaza NHK

Israel has vowed to impose a "complete siege" on the Gaza Strip. This comes as it continues to carry out airstrikes in retaliation for Hamas's incursions into Israeli territory. The country's military has summoned 300,000 reservists, the most it has mobilized in half a century.

The Israeli military's bombardment of Gaza continued on Monday. It started after Hamas launched rockets and conducted cross-border attacks in Israel on Saturday.

Local media outlets in Israel report that at least 900 people have been killed and about 2,400 others have been wounded in the country.

Health authorities in Gaza said on Monday that 560 people have been killed and more than 2,900 others have been injured in attacks conducted by Israel's military. This brings the number of deaths on both sides to over 1,400.

On Monday, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant vowed to impose a "complete siege" on Gaza. He said that the authorities would cut off electricity supplies to the territory.

The United Nations says more than 120,000 people have fled their homes in Gaza. An NHK staff member there said fierce attacks occurred around a hospital where many people had taken refuge.

The Israeli military has drafted 300,000 reservists, nearly five times the number that it summoned in 2014, when Israeli ground troops entered Gaza to carry out a large-scale operation.
