Israel says it has captured another key Hamas stronghold next to Gaza City NHK

The Israeli military said it has captured another Hamas stronghold in an area next to Gaza City.

It said on Thursday morning that its troops had taken control of a key Hamas base in the Jabaliya refugee camp north of Gaza City after 10 hours of fighting.

On Wednesday night, Hamas claimed in a social media post that it had destroyed a total of 16 Israeli military vehicles and caused serious damage to its infantry.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that about 72,000 people are estimated to have evacuated the north of Gaza to the south since November 5. But hundreds of thousands of people are reportedly still left in northern Gaza.

Meanwhile, multiple Israeli media outlets reported on Wednesday that the relevant parties are soon expected to agree to an Egyptian-brokered humanitarian pause in the fighting and the release of some hostages.

The New York Times has quoted officials close to the matter as saying that discussions are underway for Hamas to release up to 15 hostages in exchange for Israel pausing attacks on Gaza for three days.

A senior Hamas official said in a press conference on Wednesday that Israeli civilians and foreigners will be released if the conditions of a ceasefire are met.

Amid Israel's continued ground operation, it remains unpredictable whether a pause in the fighting or the hostage release can be realized.
