Floods and landslides caused by heavy rains have reportedly killed at least 120 people in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Dozens more are said to be injured, as torrents of water and mud destroyed buildings in Kinshasa on Tuesday. Local footage shows a large sinkhole in a road, and people wading through waist-high water to evacuate swamped neighborhoods. Many houses in the disaster-hit areas were reportedly built on plots without official permission. A highway has also been cut off, with repairs expected to take several days. Local authorities are rushing to reopen the artery, while trying to grasp the full extent of damage. Areas in and around Kinshasa were also hit by floods and landslides in 2019 that left more than 30 people dead.
