EU Commission head: China has 'responsibility' in Ukraine NHK

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, joined talks in Beijing on Thursday with Chinese President Xi Jinping and French President Emmanuel Macron. She said she encouraged Xi to reach out and help bring peace to Ukraine.

Von der Leyen pointed out China's responsibility as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. She warned Xi against "arming the aggressor" and, instead, to use his "friendship with Russia." She added that Russia must end its invasion and withdraw its troops.

Xi said the current international situation is complex and full of changes. He said the crisis in Ukraine has persisted and is difficult to resolve. He added that he would be willing to talk with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy "when conditions are right."

The European Union imports more goods from China than anywhere else. However, Von der Leyen noted the trade deficit has reached over 400 billion dollars, and she acknowledged relations are "extensive and complex."
