Firefighting efforts continue in LA NHK

Emergency crews fighting multiple wildfires in Los Angeles county have gotten a brief reprieve after strong winds eased a bit. But the battle to contain the flames is far from over.

The wildfires have burnt more than 150 square kilometers, destroying more than 10,000 structures.
An NHK camera crew returned to Pacific Palisades, one of the neighborhoods that flames tore through earlier in the week.

The coastline here was once lined with luxurious mansions. But the scene now is one of complete devastation.

The blaze was spread by powerful winds blowing down from the mountains.
In the central part of Palisades, a vast area has been left completely scorched, making it hard to tell that it was once the site of high-end clothing stores, restaurants and other commercial buildings.

Altadena is another residential area that's been ravaged. A local official described the devastation.

Officials say at least 11 people have died and more than 300,000 residents are under evacuation orders and warnings.

US President Joe Biden has offered full support from the federal government.

Looting has been reported in certain areas. Biden said additional security measures will be taken, including boosting the number of law enforcement officers and soldiers.
