A US Navy commander has hailed the strong alliance with South Korea after a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier arrived in Busan. The USS Carl Vinson entered the South Korean port on Sunday. This is the first port call by a US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the country since US President Donald Trump returned to office. The last such visit was made in June last year. Reporters visited the vessel on Monday. The dozens of aircraft on the over 330-meter deck included cutting-edge F-35C stealth fighters and E-2D airborne early warning planes. South Korea's Yonhap News Agency has reported that the Carl Vinson is likely to take part in a joint drill among Japan, the US and South Korea to be held this month. Rear Admiral Michael Wosje, commander of Carrier Strike Group ONE, told reporters that "clearly our presence here in Busan shows the strong alliance" between South Korea and the US. North Korea has vehemently opposed deployments of US nuclear-powered aircraft carriers around the Korean Peninsula. The US and South Korean militaries are closely monitoring actions by the North.
