A piece of timber autographed by Major League Baseball two-way star Ohtani Shohei was put on public display on Sunday at Nagoya Castle, central Japan.
The section is from a 400-year-old red pine tree from the northern prefecture of Iwate, where Ohtani grew up. It will be used in a project to restore the castle tower.
Nagoya officials asked Ohtani to autograph the wood on March 4 when he visited the city before last month's World Baseball Classic.
Visitors lined up to take photos of the exhibit to commemorate Team Japan's WBC victory. Ohtani wrote "17" below his name -- the number of the jersey he wears for the Los Angeles Angels.
A boy said he thought Ohtani was cool at the WBC, and he hopes he will continue to do his best in Major League Baseball.
The signed piece of wood will be on display at Nagoya Castle through May 7.
