Japan Airlines says the pilots of its passenger jet that collided with a Japan Coast Guard aircraft at Haneda Airport on Tuesday have reported to the company that they had no visual contact with the smaller aircraft. Japan Airlines flight 516, traveling from New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido, northern Japan, collided with a coast guard aircraft immediately after landing. All 379 passengers and crew escaped from the plane, which burst into flames. Japan Airlines says as none of the three pilots on board had visual contact with the JCG plane when it entered the runway, the pilots did not discuss aborting the approach. The airline says it cannot say at this point why the pilots failed to see the JCG aircraft. The disclosure comes as the Japan Transport Safety Board launched on Wednesday an investigation of the fatal accident. Investigators plan to question the captains of the two aircraft.
