Sources say former Japanese Foreign Minister Maehara Seiji intends to leave the opposition Democratic Party for the People. He is reportedly considering forming a new party with other lawmakers who support him. Maehara serves as the deputy leader of the DPP. The move appears to show he has been at odds with the party's leader, Tamaki Yuichiro, and other members who are stepping up cooperation with the ruling coalition to implement the DPP's policies. Maehara ran for the party's leadership in September, calling for bringing together the opposition parties, except for the Japanese Communist Party. But he was defeated by the incumbent leader. The 61-year-old Maehara has been sent to the Lower House 10 times by his constituency in Kyoto Prefecture. He served as foreign minister and transport minister in governments formed by the then Democratic Party of Japan, the predecessor of the DPP and the largest opposition Constitutional Democratic Party.
