A: Hey there! Have you heard anything interesting lately? B: Not really, what's up? A: Well, get this! Our President, Donald Trump, wants to start a new missile defense system by 2029. He's calling it the Golden Dome. B: The Golden Dome? That sounds cool. What's so special about it? A: Well, he says it can intercept missiles even from space! And guess who's gonna be in charge of this program? A Space Force general! B: Wow, that's pretty advanced technology. I wonder where they got the idea from? A: From none other than Ronald Reagan! He wanted something like this back in the 80s, but they didn't have the tech back then. B: Oh, so it's an old idea made new again. Where will they deploy this thing? A: Everywhere! Land, sea, and even in space! Trump announced it would cost about $175 billion dollars. B: That sounds expensive... But I guess security is important. What about those missile threats from China and Russia? A: Exactly! He's announcing this program amid rising concerns over those threats. Analysts, though, have raised doubts about its plausibility and costs. B: Well, only time will tell if it works out. I wonder what they changed the name from? A: Initially, they called it the Iron Dome of America, after Israel's air defense system. But they've since renamed it the Golden Dome for America. Sounds more grand, doesn't it? ---------------- US President Donald Trump says he intends to start operating a next-generation missile defense system by January 2029, the end of his term. He also told reporters on Tuesday that the Golden Dome system will be capable of intercepting missiles "even if they are launched from space." The president said he will appoint a Space Force general to oversee the program. Trump also referred to the space-based missile defense system proposed by former President Ronald Reagan during the 1980s. He said, "Ronald Reagan wanted it many years ago, but they didn't have the technology." He said the Golden Dome system would be deployed not only on land and at sea, but also in space. Trump announced the program, which he said would cost about 175 billion dollars, amid rising concerns over missile threats from China and Russia. Analysts have reportedly raised doubts about the program's plausibility and the massive costs involved. The Trump administration initially called the program the "Iron Dome of America," after Israel's air defense system designed to intercept short-range surface-to-surface rockets. It has since been renamed the "Golden Dome for America."
