Russia's Defense Ministry says the country's navy has successfully test-fired a cruise missile from a submarine deployed in the Sea of Japan. The ministry said on Friday that a diesel-powered submarine of the Pacific Fleet tested a Kalibr cruise missile. It reportedly struck a target at a training ground in the Khabarovsk region more than 1,000 kilometers away. The Pacific Fleet is headquartered in Russia's Far Eastern city of Vladivostok. Russia also test-fired a Kalibr in the Sea of Japan in March last year. Observers say Friday's test was aimed at keeping the United States and ally Japan in check. Russia has been at odds with the US over the war in Ukraine, as well as Washington's apparent attempt to increase its military presence in the Asia-Pacific region. Japan has imposed sanctions on Moscow in tandem with the US.
