A: Hey, bud! What's the latest scoop? B: Nothing much, just some news about Thailand and Cambodia. A: Oh, really? What happened? B: They had a bit of a fight along their border last week, over some territory. Sadly, one soldier lost his life during the skirmish. A: Woah! That sounds serious. Did they go to war? B: Nope, not exactly. They're talking about it now, though. Thailand is asking Cambodia to talk directly, while Cambodia wants a ruling from the International Court of Justice. A: Oh, I see. So, they disagree on how to resolve this issue? B: Exactly! Thailand doesn't recognize the ICJ's jurisdiction and thinks they already have ways to sort it out between themselves. Cambodia, on the other hand, feels like the current methods aren't enough. A: That's quite a pickle they've gotten themselves into! But at least they both want peace, right? B: Yep! They both claim they want to protect their sovereignty while seeking a peaceful resolution. A: It's good to hear that they want peace. I hope they can sort things out soon. B: Me too, friend! And despite these issues, they've been getting along better recently. So let's hope for the best! ---------------- Thailand has called on Cambodia to push ahead with direct dialogue following last week's military clash along their border. The government in Phnom Penh has insisted it will seek a ruling from the International Court of Justice. The two countries' armed forces exchanged fire in a contested border area on May 28. One Cambodian soldier died in the brief skirmish. The Thai government said in a statement on Thursday that it does not recognize jurisdiction of the ICJ. It noted the two sides already have existing bilateral channels to address the issue. Phnom Penh had earlier announced its intention to file a case with the international court, citing limitations with the current mechanisms for resolving disputes. Both countries say they are seeking a peaceful resolution, while also pledging to protect their sovereignty. Thailand and Cambodia have enjoyed closer diplomatic relations in recent years, despite long-running territorial issues.
