Xi likely to secure third term on final day of CCP's National Congress NHK

Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to secure a rare third term as the leader of the ruling Communist Party. It is customary for top party officials to retire at the age of 68.

The Communist Party's National Congress is held every five years. This year's meeting is scheduled to end on Saturday.

Delegates will vote on a draft revision of the party's constitution on the final day.

The draft is expected to include a statement expressing support for the establishment of Xi's core position in the party and his position as an ideological leader.

Delegates will also vote to elect about 200 members of the Central Committee, which elects the members of the party's supreme leadership body, the Politburo Standing Committee.

Sixty-nine-year-old Xi is likely to be elected to the Central Committee and start a third term as party leader.

The new Central Committee is expected to hold its first meeting as early as Sunday. Members of the Standing Committee will be chosen at that time.
