Weather officials in Japan are warning of heatstroke risk as they forecast extremely hot weather on Sunday. The Meteorological Agency says that temperatures will rise as a high pressure system covers wide areas from western Japan to northern Japan. A daytime high of 38 degrees Celsius is expected for Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture and Gifu City; 37 degrees is forecast in Sumoto in Hyogo Prefecture, Yamaguchi City, Hiroshima City, Kurume in Fukuoka Prefecture and Hita in Oita Prefecture. The temperature is expected to reach 36 degrees in Kofu in Yamanashi Prefecture and Kumamoto City. The Meteorological Agency and the Environment Ministry have issued heatstroke alerts for 31 of Japan's 47 prefectures between the Kanto-Koshin and Kyushu regions. Many people have developed heatstroke as the severe hot weather continues to grip Japan. Deaths have resulted in extreme cases. People are advised to avoid unnecessary outings and exercise, use air conditioners appropriately, and to consume adequate water and salt. Elderly people and infants need to be given special attention as they are at higher risk. Those who are planning outdoor leisure activities are advised to bring water bottles with ice and ice packs.
