Trump announces bid for 2024 presidency NHK

Former US President Donald Trump has announced his bid for the 2024 presidential race, stressing that he will "make America great and glorious again."

Trump spoke to supporters on Tuesday at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

He said that while he was president, his team built the greatest economy in the history of the world, and kept China, Russia, Iran and North Korea in check. He stressed that America was great and glorious under his leadership.

Trump claimed his successor, President Joe Biden, destroyed the US economy, abolished its borders and put the US into decline.

He blamed the Biden administration's inflation and immigration policies for making the US a "failing nation."

Trump said, "In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States."

He vowed to defeat "the radical left Democrats" that he claimed are trying to destroy the US from within.

If ultimately elected, Trump would be only the second US president to serve nonconsecutive terms, after Grover Cleveland, who won in 1884 and 1892.

Trump made clear that all his policies would be "America First," and pledged to "keep America out of foolish and unnecessary foreign wars" -- suggesting possible revisions in how the US would deal with other countries, including Ukraine.

Trump has been criticized for failing to rally enough support for the Republicans in this month's midterms.

But he stressed that many of the candidates he backed won.

Biden, meanwhile, posted on Twitter, "Trump failed America."

His message includes video of Trump supporters storming the US Capitol in January last year, with the subtitle "Inciting a violent mob."

Other subtitles criticizing Trump include "Rigging economy for rich" and "Attacking women's rights."
