Myanmar to be a focus at ASEAN foreign ministers' meetings in Indonesia NHK

The turmoil in Myanmar will be high on the agenda as top diplomats from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations begin a round of talks in Indonesia on Tuesday.

The first two days of discussions in Jakarta bring together the foreign ministers of ASEAN member nations. The top diplomats of other countries, including Japan, the US and China, will join them later in the week.

The meetings come as the implementation of the "Five-Point Consensus" on Myanmar remains largely stalled. The five-point plan, agreed on by ASEAN members in the presence of Myanmar's military leader, calls for an immediate end to the violence and an ASEAN envoy to mediate dialogue between the junta and pro-democracy groups.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi of Indonesia, which assumes ASEAN's rotating chairmanship this year, insists that it's time to take the next step forward. She said she has been in touch with officials in Myanmar.

The ASEAN foreign ministers will meet with their counterparts from Japan, China and South Korea on Thursday to discuss maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and other issues.

On the final day of talks on Friday, delegations from the US, China and Russia will join discussions on issues relating to the South China Sea and Ukraine.
