The first global summit for discussing ways to mitigate the dangers posed by artificial intelligence kicks off on Wednesday in Britain. The AI Safety Summit 2023, held just outside London, will run for two days. About 100 people are taking part, including senior government officials from the United States, China, Japan and 25 other countries. The delegates from the private sector reportedly include Elon Musk, who recently launched an AI startup. British government officials say highly capable, general-purpose "frontier AI" models hold "enormous potential to power economic growth, drive scientific progress and wider public benefits." But they also warn that the technology could threaten global stability if used in the production of biological weapons or to conduct cyberattacks. The officials add that frontier AI has the potential to outsmart humans and spiral out of control. The attendees are expected to discuss ways of sharing and understanding the risks and appropriate measures that individual organizations should take to ensure frontier AI safety. They will also likely discuss the potential for collaboration on research into AI safety. German research firm Statista says the AI market is expected to grow nearly twentyfold by 2030 to more than 1.8 trillion dollars.
