A memorial rally was held at Australia's Bondi Beach on Sunday, one week after the deadly shooting at a Jewish festival event.
Two male suspects opened fire during Hanukkah celebrations on December 14 on the beach in Sydney. The incident left 16 people dead and more than 40 wounded. The death toll includes one of the suspects.
The attackers have been identified as a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son. Both are believed to have been inspired by the Islamic State militant group. The father was shot dead by police on the spot. His son has been charged with murder and other offenses.
People observed a moment of silence from 6:47 p.m., when the rampage began.
Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese attended the memorial and was booed when his name was read out. He faces growing criticism that he has not done enough to address a recent surge in antisemitism, including an arson attack on a synagogue.
A representative of an association of Jewish residents denounced the government's response in a speech, saying the tragedy occurred despite warnings from Jewish residents and intelligence authorities.
One of the participants said hate is not acceptable in Australia and those gathered at the rally have proved it.
In the wake of the incident, the Australian government is rushing to unveil measures to tighten gun control and impose harsher penalties for hate speech.
