Data NHK obtained shows that Russia has hired about 3,000 foreign fighters for its invasion of Ukraine. But the actual figure likely surpasses the estimate as some deployments are believed to be unreported. NHK compiled information on the deployment of mercenaries as the battle in Ukraine approaches its two-year mark on Saturday. The data is from media reports and news releases by governments and human rights groups. They also show that Russia recruited the mercenaries from at least 25 countries and regions. Syria was the largest contributor of paid fighters with about 2,000 people. At least 200 each come from Nepal and the Kyrgyz Republic. About 199 or more are from Cuba, and 150 from the Central African Republic. Some foreign fighters have reportedly been lured by private military contractors while they were in jail in Russia. Moscow has also enticed fighters in Nepal and Cuba by offering high salaries. Russia's President Vladimir Putin announced in January that citizenship procedures will be simplified for foreign nationals who sign a one-year contract with the military. Families of such recruits are also eligible.
