East Japan Railway has test-run a coupled Tohoku Shinkansen train prior to resuming normal service this weekend.
JR East suspended operation of coupled trains on the Tohoku Shinkansen line after the Hayabusa and Komachi trains became detached while traveling through Tokyo last Thursday.
The decoupling appears to have been caused by an electric abnormality. The company decided to secure the lever on the coupling device with metal fittings so that it would not become disconnected in case of an irregularity.
On Wednesday, workers boarded the cabs of both the Hayabusa and Komachi trains that were linked at Morioka Station and secured the lever.
The coupled train then departed for a railyard in Miyagi Prefecture.
JR East will check the results of the test before gradually resuming operation of coupled trains on Friday.
The company plans to run the trains on a normal schedule from Saturday.
JR East official Kotani Noritaka apologized for causing passengers so much trouble and promised to determine the cause of the decoupling with safety as a top priority.
