The US and South Korean militaries remain vigilant against provocations by North Korea after wrapping up large-scale amphibious landing drills on Monday. The Ssangyong exercise, which translates as "double dragon," began on March 20 in Pohang, in South Korea's southeast. It was the first major exercise in five years. The South Korean military says about 30 vessels and 50 amphibious armored vehicles were mobilized. Local media report that the exercise involved more than 10,000 troops. Joint US-South Korean exercises were either canceled or scaled down under the administration of former South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who wanted to promote dialogue with North Korea. But the administration of President Yoon Suk-yeol has been expanding the drills. Also on Monday, South Korea's Defense Ministry said the country had kicked off a two-day trilateral naval exercise with the United States and Japan, involving the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier the USS Nimitz. On Sunday, North Korea expressed strong opposition to the latest drills through a state-run news agency.
