Millions of people in India celebrated Diwali, one of the most significant festivals in Hinduism, on Monday. They wished for health and happiness over the next year.
Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and is associated with Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity.
The festival marks the New Year according to the Hindu calendar. People typically celebrate by socializing and exchanging gifts with family and friends.
Cities and towns are decorated with colorful illuminations and fireworks are set off. These are believed to please the gods and bring blessings.
One woman said, "On this occasion, kindly spread your light and happiness with everyone. It is all about sharing and caring."
But in recent years, the festival has been clouded by concerns over air pollution, as smoke-emitting firecrackers cause toxic smog.
Smog has blanketed the Indian capital since the celebrations began.
India's air quality monitoring agency said on Monday the level of tiniest particulates surged to more than 350, about 14 times higher than the World Health Organization's daily recommended limit.
