Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio will begin a nine-day trip to Southeast Asia on Friday. He is due to attend the Group of 20 summit and two other summit meetings.

Kishida will visit Cambodia, Indonesia and Thailand during the trip. He will attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations conference and the Asia-Pacific Economic Forum, in addition to the G20 summit.

Kishida is expected to stress the importance of international unity based on the rule of law during the meetings, which come as Russia's invasion of Ukraine threatens the international order.

The prime minister plans to highlight Japan's determination to create stable supplies of food and bring about decarbonization.

Kishida will hold a three-way summit meeting in Cambodia with the leaders of the US and South Korea. They will discuss their responses to North Korea, which has repeatedly launched ballistic missiles recently.

The Japanese prime minister will hold a bilateral meeting with US President Joe Biden. The two leaders are expected to reaffirm the importance of the Japan-US alliance, in light of the increase in China's maritime activities.

A summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping is also being considered. If the face-to-face meeting takes place, it will be their first in three years.
