Tokyo's benchmark stock index fell sharply on Thursday. Investors unloaded auto and other export-related shares amid the yen's rise against the dollar. The Nikkei 225 ended the day at 40,126, down 2.4 percent. It plunged by almost 1,000 points at one point before narrowing losses. Semiconductor-industry stocks also dropped on reports the US may crack down on the chip-related exports to China. The Japanese currency strengthened to the 155-yen level against the dollar at one stage, its strongest in about six weeks. The gain came amid speculation the Bank of Japan will raise interest rates.
