Japanese weather officials say a rain front and cold air is bringing snow again to the Kanto-Koshin region, including Tokyo. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting heavy snow in mountainous areas of the Kanto-Koshin region and Shizuoka Prefecture through Wednesday morning, and in mountainous areas of the Tohoku region through Thursday. Snow may even accumulate in the southern Kanto region, including Tokyo's 23 wards, and disrupt transportation. In the six hours through 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Kusatsu Town in Gunma Prefecture observed 10 centimeters of snowfall, and Hakuba Village in Nagano Prefecture 7 centimeters. The agency says a low-pressure system over the front is moving east along the southern coast of the main island of Honshu. In the 24 hours through Wednesday evening, up to 40 centimeters of snowfall is forecast in mountainous areas of the Tohoku region's Pacific side, 30 centimeters in the same region's flatlands, as well as in the mountainous areas of northern Kanto, 25 centimeters in Koshin, and 20 centimeters in mountainous areas of Shizuoka Prefecture. The plains of northern Kanto and the Hakone area to Tama and Chichibu areas may get 15 centimeters of snowfall. The flat areas of southern Kanto may get 8 centimeters, with 3 centimeters forecast for Tokyo's 23 wards. In the 24 hours through Thursday evening, 40 centimeters of snowfall is forecast for mountainous areas of Tohoku's Pacific coast. Weather officials are urging caution against traffic disruptions due to snow and icy roads. Precautionary road closures are in place in some sections of expressways, including the Tomei and Metropolitan expressways, as well as national highways.
