Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was inaugurated for a second term, along with his new government, on Tuesday. This came after his Labor Party secured a landslide victory in a general election on May 3. With vote counting still going on, Australia's public news service ABC reported that the party is expected to win at least 93 seats in the 150-seat House of Representatives. Albanese and his Cabinet ministers were sworn in at a ceremony before the country's Governor-General Sam Mostyn in the capital Canberra on Tuesday. Key Cabinet posts remain unchanged, including Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles and Foreign Minister Penny Wong. The prime minister is expected to maintain economic ties with China, which is Australia's largest trade partner, while putting emphasis on coordination with the United States and Japan in terms of security. The Cabinet's imminent challenges will include how to deal with US tariff policy under President Donald Trump. Albanese chose Indonesia as his first overseas trip destination since his re-election. He will meet Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday. He will also attend the inauguration mass of new Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican scheduled for Sunday. He is expected to meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss efforts toward signing a free trade agreement.
