Saturday marks four years since Myanmar's military staged a coup. The country has been mired in conflict ever since, and humanitarian concerns are rising. Officials with the junta have kept Myanmar under a state of emergency ever since their power grab in 2021. Officials said on Friday that they've extended the measure for another six months. The military carried out a census in October after promising to hold an election in 2025 and transition to a civilian government. The military is embroiled in a prolonged battle with pro-democracy forces and armed ethnic minority groups. A human rights group in Myanmar says as of Friday, more than 6,000 civilians have been killed since the coup. The United Nations says the number of displaced people will likely exceed 4.5 million this year. That's up about 30 percent from 2024.
