North Korea's military says it has ordered units to fire artillery shells into the sea. This is the second day in a row that such an order has been issued. The move is apparently in response to the joint drills that South Korea and the United States are currently conducting. A spokesperson for the North's General Staff of the Korean People's Army said on Tuesday that the army had "detected the South Korean military's firing of artillery from multiple rocket launchers" from about 9:15 a.m. The official said the army issued a combat emergency alert to its frontline and other units, and immediately ordered them to fire artillery shells into the sea as a strong warning. South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported that the North fired artillery shells into the sea. On Monday, the South Korean military said North Korea fired a total of 130 artillery shells into waters east and west of the Korean Peninsula. The North's army stated that the shells were fired as a warning. Yonhap said US forces and the South Korean military have been engaged in live-fire drills in Gangwon Province, near the military demarcation line, since Monday. Rocket launchers are being used in the drills.
