Soaring rice prices in Indonesia are taking a hard toll on people's daily lives as many observe the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Rice is the key staple food for Indonesians. Its domestic price has risen about 20 percent from a year ago. Abnormal weather conditions and India's export restrictions are among the reasons. More than 80 percent of Indonesia's population of 270 million are Muslims. Eating rice dishes after sunset is customary during Ramadan. Food stalls in the capital Jakarta typically attract crowds of people buying food after sunset. But sellers have raised their prices or reduced the amount of rice they use. One customer said rising rice prices are tough enough, but the prices of eggs and other items are also increasing. She said prices should return to normal levels.
