Officials discuss Japan's help for Ukraine farm sector NHK

Officials from Japan and Ukraine have held talks on how Tokyo can help rebuild the European nation's war-ravaged farming sector.

The inaugural meeting of the bilateral policy dialogue for the restoration of Ukraine's agriculture took place online on Wednesday.

Ukraine's Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, Markiyan Dmytrasevych, asked for advice from Japan, which he said is renowned for its advanced farming technology.

Ukraine was a major producer of wheat and corn before Russia's invasion, but its farmland has been heavily damaged.

Officials from Japan's Agriculture Ministry said the Ukrainians showed interest in tractors and other farming equipment made in Japan that can operate on small plots of land.

They also said that the two countries will continue to discuss how Ukraine can adopt smart farming. That refers to agricultural practices that use AI and ICT, or information and communication technology, to make farming more efficient.
