South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol is set to make a state visit to the United States at the end of next month for a summit with President Joe Biden.

South Korea's presidential office announced the plan on Tuesday.

It will be the first state visit to the US by a South Korean president since 2011. It comes in a year in which the two countries mark their alliance's 70th anniversary.

The presidential office described the alliance as one of the most successful and said Yoon's visit will serve as a milestone for it to evolve more actively.

The two leaders plan to discuss extended deterrence -- the US protects its allies with nuclear and other weapons -- and economic security among other issues.

They are also expected to affirm the strengthening of trilateral cooperation together with Japan.

The South Korean government will seek to demonstrate its strong partnership with the US amid North Korea's growing nuclear and missile threats.

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on Tuesday met with his South Korean counterpart Kim Sung-han in Washington in preparation for the state visit.

A White House said they discussed how to maintain close cooperation to respond to the Indo-Pacific region's changing threat environment.

It also said they condemned North Korea's destabilizing activity, and highlighted the need for the international community to limit the North's ability to advance its unlawful weapons mass destruction program that threatens regional stability.

Earlier this week, the South Korean government announced a plan to settle its long-standing wartime labor issue with Japan. Tokyo responded positively.

The statement said Sullivan welcomed the breakthrough between Japan and South Korea "to resolve historical issues and open the door to increased cooperation between the two key allies."
