A nonpartisan group of Japanese lawmakers has met South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and members of a South Korean parliamentary group.

The meeting took place on Friday at the South Korean presidential office in Seoul.

Nukaga Fukushiro, a member of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, conveyed a message from Prime Minister Kishida Fumio to the president. The message called for developing sound relationships between the two countries.

Yoon stressed the importance of developing human exchanges to solidify the foundations for strengthening ties between the two countries. He also called for promoting cooperation at the level of lawmakers to further expand exchanges.

Nukaga, a former finance minister who heads the Japan-South Korea parliamentarians' union, said on behalf of Kishida that Japan, South Korea and the United States should work closely to respond to threats posed by North Korea.

He went on to say that it will be important for the two countries to continue efforts to build a sound relationship just as they have done since the normalization of diplomatic ties.

After the meeting, Nukaga quoted Yoon as saying that although various issues persist between the two countries, both governments continue serious negotiations. Nukaga said Yoon added that he believes the improved ties will benefit the two countries.

Nukaga told reporters that his group will support the two governments' efforts.
