Hong Kong authorities are investigating whether there were any violations in safety management and construction work after the fire at a high-rise apartment complex that killed more than 120 people.
The authorities on Friday arrested eight more people in connection with the fire, including subcontractors and directors of an engineering consultant company.
The blaze broke out on Wednesday, engulfing seven of the eight apartment blocks at the site in the northern district of Tai Po. Each of the buildings has over 30 stories.
The deaths of 128 people have been confirmed and about 200 are unaccounted for. The fire was mostly contained by Friday. Operations to search for the missing continue.
Authorities said in a news conference on Friday that firefighters found that alarms in the complex did not sound when tested. Officials said flammable foam boards used in a repair project at the complex may have helped spread the flames.
On Thursday, police arrested three people from the construction company overseeing the repair project on suspicion of manslaughter. The police said gross negligence by the company&#039;s leaders led the fire to spread.
