The former head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Emeritus Benedict the 16th, has died at a monastery in the Vatican. He was 95 years old.
A spokesman for the Holy See announced the demise of the former pontiff in a statement on Saturday.
German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected the 265th pope in 2005 at the age of 78 after the death of Pope John Paul the 2nd. He chose the name Benedict the 16th.
Pope Benedict resigned in 2013 due to old age and poor health. He was the first pontiff in 600 years to resign from the post rather than rule for life.
