Brazilians divided on Supreme Court's move to suspend social media platform X NHK

Access to social media platform X has been partially blocked in Brazil since the country's Supreme Court ordered relevant organizations to take measures to suspend the service last month, in response to X's refusal to delete accounts spreading misinformation.

Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who are at odds with the Supreme Court, rallied in the center of the country's biggest city Sao Paulo on Saturday.

Bolsonaro criticized the judge who issued the suspension order, saying that it is necessary to stop people who deviate from the scope of the Constitution.

Participants said limiting freedom of speech is equivalent to censorship and must not be tolerated, and that the court is underestimating the risks the move poses to the country.

A poll by an opinion survey company which has an office in Brazil shows that 50.9 percent of local respondents opposed the suspension, while 48.1 percent supported it.
