The United States and Russia have agreed to hold talks on resuming inspections under a bilateral treaty aimed at reducing their respective nuclear arms. Russia announced in August that it would briefly suspend accepting inspections of relevant facilities under the New START Treaty. Moscow claimed that it became difficult for Russian inspectors to travel to the US due to sanctions imposed by Washington and its allies over Russia's invasion of Ukraine. On Tuesday, US State Department spokesperson Ned Price announced the agreement with Russia. He told reporters that the treaty's Bilateral Consultative Commission "will meet in the near future." The BCC is the "mechanism for discussing treaty implementation issues." Price added, "We have focused on risk reduction" through such meetings. Asked whether Ukraine will be part of the upcoming meeting, Price said, "This is about the New START Treaty," and "Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine is a cardinal principle that applies to Russia's war in Ukraine."
