Tesla to build new factory for energy-storage battery in Shanghai NHK

US electric vehicle maker Tesla has announced that it will build a new factory in Shanghai to produce large-scale energy-storage batteries.

The firm posted the announcement on Twitter on Sunday along with a photo showing a signing ceremony.

Tesla positions such energy-storage units, which are indispensable for the use of renewable energy, as one of its main businesses. The new factory is believed to be the firm's first production base of its kind outside of the United States.

US media say the plant will be capable of producing 10,000 of the energy-storage batteries, known as Megapacks, per year. That is equal to around 40 gigawatt hours of energy storage.

They also say production is planned to start between April and June next year.

Tesla continues to place importance on the Chinese market, while some firms are reviewing their investment in the county amid a feud between the governments of the US and China.

In 2019, Tesla launched the production of electric vehicles in Shanghai.
Summary
Tesla plans to build a factory in Shanghai for large-scale energy-storage battery production, marking its first overseas base outside the US. The plant, capable of producing 10,000 Megapacks annually (equivalent to 40GWh of energy storage), is set to begin operation between April and June 2023.
