China holds military drills around Taiwan NHK

China's military says it held drills around Taiwan on Sunday. Taiwan's defense ministry detected dozens of Chinese military aircraft in surrounding areas in the 24-hour period to Monday morning.

The Chinese military's Eastern Theater Command said on Sunday that the ability of units to carry out integrated operations was checked during the drills, with the focus on attacking land and enemies in the sea.

Taiwan's defense ministry said 57 aircraft and four vessels of the Chinese military were detected around Taiwan in the 24-hour period to 6 a.m. on Monday.

The ministry said 28 of the aircraft had crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone.

It also said some aircraft, including an H-6 bomber, moved to waters southeast of Taiwan after entering its southwestern ADIZ and passing over the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines.

The Chinese military says the drills were a resolute response to provocations jointly made by Taiwan's independence forces and external forces.

The drills come as lawmakers from South Korea and European countries that do not have diplomatic ties with Taipei have been visiting Taiwan.
