US commerce secretary to make 4-day visit to China from Sunday NHK

US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo will visit China later this month to meet senior Chinese officials.

The US Commerce Department announced on Tuesday that Raimondo will travel to Beijing and Shanghai from August 27 to 30.

The department said she "looks forward to constructive discussions on issues relating to the U.S.-China commercial relationship, challenges faced by U.S. businesses, and areas for potential cooperation."

Her visit will take place amid tensions between the two countries over advanced technology.

The US said on August 9 that President Joe Biden signed an executive order to regulate investment in China in sensitive sectors including semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

Washington argued that advanced technologies in these sectors could be diverted for military use.

Starting August 1, China imposed export restrictions on items related to two rare metals, gallium and germanium, used to make semiconductors.

When US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen visited China last month, the two sides confirmed that they would engage in dialogue.

Attention is on whether Raimondo's visit will help improve bilateral relations.
