Japan's Nippon Steel says it's now aiming to complete its planned buyout of US Steel by June instead of this month. The companies agreed on the takeover in December 2023. Since then the Japanese firm has had to postpone the necessary procedures twice due largely to opposition in the US. President Joe Biden blocked the buyout in January. He cited national security concerns as the reason. His replacement, Donald Trump, has said Nippon Steel can only take a minority stake in US Steel. The Japanese firm says it will hold talks with Trump based on the original acquisition plan. Nippon Steel President Imai Tadashi has said he feels the sides are reaching a shared view on the need to strengthen America's steel and manufacturing industries.
