China has reported its first death from the coronavirus in about six months. The Chinese government says about 23,000 new cases of the virus were confirmed in the nation's 31 provinces and autonomous regions on Saturday. It says an 87-year-old man died in Beijing after his underlying conditions worsened. This was the first coronavirus fatality since Shanghai imposed severe restrictions on people's movements in late May. The virus has been rapidly spreading in China since the daily nationwide tally of new cases dropped below 1,000 one month ago. Many restaurants in Beijing's Chaoyang district have suspended dine-in services. The district has a population of about 3.4 million. The Beijing authorities are also advising residents not to go out this weekend unless it is absolutely necessary. Anti-virus measures have also been strengthened elsewhere around the country. The restrictions have caused a slump in consumer spending that is preventing China's economy from recovering. Earlier this month, the Chinese government announced plans to review its anti-virus measures, including shortening the quarantine period for close contacts. It is facing the difficult task of working out an appropriate balance between promoting economic activities and keeping anti-virus measures in place.
