Voters in the state of South Carolina are set to take part in the Republican primary on Saturday. They have seen former President Donald Trump pull off a resounding victory in three other states, and their former governor, Nikki Haley, is fighting for the survival of her candidacy.

Haley is trying to overcome steep odds. She remembers how she vanquished her dominant rivals 14 years ago in the race to become governor. She went on to serve as ambassador to the United Nations during Trump's term as president. She said he is not yet the "presumptive nominee".

Haley spoke at a rally on Friday. She said, "We don't anoint kings in America. We have elections, and South Carolinians deserve the right to be able to vote, as do the other states."

Haley had promised that she is "not going anywhere." One of her supporters said, "We will continue to support her and I hope that she keeps plugging away and fighting."

However, the Trump team has zeroed in on Haley's home state. Earlier in the week, they predicted that "the end is near" for her campaign.

Trump said he was confident of victory, telling a crowd at a rally, "Tomorrow's your big day. You're gonna vote in a primary tomorrow. But the big day is November 5th."

The former president has picked up many endorsements from Republican figures in the state. Former South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer pointed out that Haley has "followers" but Trump has "disciples."

Bauer said, "How dominant President Trump is running against another person in their home state -- there's going to be no hope for any victory anywhere else. It is going to send a clear message where this state is, and other states will soon follow."

Recent polls place Trump's support at more than 60 percent and Haley's under 40 percent.
