Two Japanese movies have won big accolades at this year's Academy Awards in Los Angeles. They include "Godzilla Minus One," the first Japanese or Asian-made film to win the Oscar for best Visual Effects.
The Hollywood ceremony on Sunday was a chance to honor the best and brightest in cinema.
They include the team behind the latest Godzilla movie, the 30th Japanese-made live-action film to feature the big guy. This time, Godzilla unleashes chaos in post-war Japan. Director Yamazaki Takashi wrote the script and created the visual effects.
Yamazaki said: "This award is a proof that everyone has a chance. We did it! Thank you, thank you so much! "
And, a major figure in the global animation world, Miyazaki Hayao, has won the Oscar for best Animated Feature Film for "The Boy and the Heron."
The story is about a boy who wanders into a mysterious world after losing his mother in World War Two. The 83-year old Miyazaki directed and also wrote the original story and screenplay. It took him seven years to make the film.
It is also Miyazaki's second movie to win in this category, after "Spirited Away" took home the award in 2003.
Staff at Miyazaki's Tokyo-based production company, Studio Ghibli, erupted in applause.
Its producer, Suzuki Toshio, said, "I told Miyazaki congratulations by phone. He also congratulated me on my celebration."
Movie fans in Tokyo are also celebrating Japan's Oscar success.
Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan's World War Two epic "Oppenheimer" was Oscar night's biggest winner.
The film about the scientist who led the development of the first atomic bomb swept seven categories, including Best Picture and Best Director.
