A Japanese court has denied an injunction sought by a citizens' group to halt an aging nuclear reactor on the Sea of Japan coast. The plaintiffs had filed a suit with Osaka District Court to halt the No. 3 reactor at the Mihama nuclear power plant in Fukui Prefecture. They cited the facility's age and susceptibility to serious accidents due to its insufficient resistance to massive earthquakes. The lifespan of reactors in Japan has been limited to 40 years in principle since the 2011 accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. They can be allowed to operate for up to 60 years if they pass regulatory authorities' screening. This exception was applied for the first time to the Mihama No. 3 reactor when it went back online in June 2021. The reactor was first fired up 46 years ago. Tuesday's court decision was the first involving the safety of a nuclear plant that has been in operation for more than four decades.
